Manager

Prior to Cube I forged a successful career in the Profession, eventually progressing to Manager for a national firm in Cheltenham.

Following my relocation to Northamptonshire in 2008 I joined Cube as a Manager with direct responsibility for a portfolio of Cube’s non-audit clients with audit clients being managed by my colleagues. In this role my objective, alongside Cube, is to provide a quality service for our clients in a timely manner at a competitive price, however large or small the business is. This could suggest that the work is monotonous, preparing accounts and working out clients’ tax liabilities, but the variety for me comes in the form that clients produce their records. Some clients use complex accounting software, which does 'everything', other clients prefer a more relaxed approach to their records keeping and merely throw everything in a carrier bag.

To misquote Forrest Gump's mother, "Work is like a box of chocolates you never know what you are going to get" when a new client turns up. The skill is to use the clients’ records in the most efficient manner in order to achieve the core objective. A secondary objective is to help the client to get more from their accounts so they are aware of potential problems earlier rather than 12 months after the problems have arisen and several thousand pounds have been 'lost'.

Although the primary objective is what makes the money, it is the secondary objective that is the most rewarding. Sitting down with a client to explain their accounts and what the figures mean and what they could do to improve their businesses is very satisfying. However what I find even more satisfying is helping the client with their accounting system, whether that’s using their existing package to its full potential or introducing a basic system to replace the carrier bag.

The key to meeting all these objectives however is having the autonomy and independence to deal directly with clients and help improve their business.
